Boundaries, Relationships & Social Skills Development for People with Developmental Disabilities

This workshop provides an introduction to teaching sexuality and social skills to persons with disabilities. Participants will be provided with teaching strategies and applicable resources will be demonstrated to help promote, teach and model healthy sexuality and social skills development. Misconceptions about sexuality and disability as well as strategies for response to sexual and challenging social issues will be discussed. Typical subject areas to be addressed include: public/private, touching and boundaries, social skills, relationships, sexual developmental milestones, puberty, healthy & safety.

Audience: teachers, service/support providers, families, and caregivers.

 

 

Abuse Prevention & Treatment Strategies

This workshop offers an overview of the issues related to abuse of children and adults with disabilities. Strategies to prevent abuse and how to respond to incidents of abuse will be presented. Topics to be addressed include: myths, risk factors, barriers to disclosure, responding to disclosure and effective prevention strategies.

Audience: Teachers, service/support providers, families and caregivers.

 

 

Ethical Boundaries

This workshop focuses on professional boundaries for touch and affection during direct care and support when working with persons with disabilities. During the workshop participants will:

    - Identify boundary issues for service providers in supporting persons with disabilities.
    - Examine issues surrounding personal care and prevention of abuse.
    - Identify ways in which to build in prevention strategies for their practice.

Audience: teachers, families, administrators, service/support providers and front line caregivers.
